Get ready Texas blues harmonica lovers, Houston harp king Sonny Boy Terry along with www.houstonharmonicalessons.com is bringing in famed New York blues-bred, now living in Mississippi harmonica master, author, educator, street blues musician Adam Gussow for Houston's very first harmonica festival/clinic on Saturday, July 31st. This all day harmonica camp and concert will feature several of Texas' finest blues harmonica players including Austin's Rob Roy Parnell, Dave Nevling and the Blues Kats, and 2010 Houston IBC winner the Sonny Boy Terry Band. Kicking off the festivities is up and coming blues act, fronted by Sonny Boy Terry's former harmonica student and protege' The H-Town Jukes. Stay tuned for more information. "Tunes For Turtles" Benefit Concert - July 25th

Legendary Bluesmen (Tutu Jones, Texas Johnny Brown, Guitar Shorty, Sonny Boy Terry, and more) feeling the need to help combat the effects of BP oil in the Gulf of Mexico, have come together to put on Tunes For Turtles benefitting Sea Turtle Inc. (a 501c-3 on South Padre Island, TX dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and release of Gulf Sea Turtles)
Tunes For Turtles provides Texas music fans the chance to help Gulf Sea Turtles while watching a showcase of Blues greats perform together in a small, intimate setting, for just $5 at the door- a rare opportunity that would normally carry a hefty price tag. Audience members will get to be up close and personal with the musicians, with plenty of photo and autograph opportunities. (Doors open at 2:00 pm with live music performances from 2:30 to 7:00 pm) A silent auction will be held during the concert from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. The Big Easy is located at 5731 Kirby Drive in Houston, TX.
Lezlea Ross, of JLK Productions, is working in the Rio Grande Valley to coordinate efforts with Sea Turtle Inc. (a 501c-3 org), performing artists, and the media. Gwen Alexis&Cyndi King of Texas Blues Booking, are coordinating efforts with the Big Easy,&the Houston Blues Society who have volunteered to help. Every single person involved with this event has volunteered his or her time & performance, so all proceeds will go directly to Sea Turtle Inc.
Sea Turtle Inc. (a 501c-3 non-profit org.) works year round to rescue and rehabilitate Gulf Coast sea turtles, with focus on the Kemp's Ridley population. Several weeks ago, Sea Turtle Inc. (Headquartered on South Padre Island, TX) started preparations to receive any overflow of oiled turtles from Louisiana and Florida. The Port Isabel Navigation district has given Sea Turtle Inc. the use of a large, abandoned, shrimp farm that can hold over 100 turtles.
Nesting Kemp's Ridley females (that nest only in Texas and in Tamaulipas, Mexico) will migrate north to Louisiana after laying eggs on our beaches from April through July. This year, the Kemp's Ridley annual migration, which goes directly through the area affected by the BP oil spill, is a recipe for disaster! This is very sad to see after decades of work by Ila Loetscher, Sea Turtle Inc. and so many others who have helped the species start to recover from near extinction.
Jeff George of Sea Turtle Inc. states "The old shrimp facility in Port Isabel is in need of much work, specifically on pumps and filters as well as some building repairs. We're not sure we will ever recover enough turtles to need it, but our philosophy is to be prepared.
BP has allocated 5 million dollars to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation for the Kemp's Ridley Turtles. However, they have not released any funding, as of yet, and have said that until there's oil in Texas they likely won't release funds to Texas organizations.
So, in true Texas fashion, to help the smallest, and most endangered, Kemp's Ridley sea turtles, Blues artists have come together to do what they do best - Put on a great show!- Don't miss this Summer Sunday afternoon of foot stomping, hip shaking Texas Blues! - Admission is $5, Doors Open at 2pm.
